Coordination Control of Battery Energy Storage System and Supercapacitors for High-Frequency PV Smoothing in Microgrids

Abstract

The high penetration of Photovoltaic (PV) systems in modern microgrids introduces significant power quality challenges, specifically high-frequency power fluctuations caused by intermittent irradiance and cloud transients. While Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are widely used for energy management, their low power density and limited cycle life make them inadequate for mitigating high-frequency transients. This paper proposes a novel coordinated control strategy for a Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS) integrating BESS and Supercapacitors (SCs). The proposed configuration employs an Adaptive Frequency-Splitting (AFS) algorithm based on a variable coefficient Low-Pass Filter (LPF). Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed coordination control reduces the battery’s peak current stress by 42.5% and stabilizes the DC bus voltage within a 1.2% deviation range, potentially extending battery cycle life by approximately 29%.
