Abstract

Economic development in any country depends largely on efficient, reliable and affordable electricity supply. Nigeria is one of the countries in the West African sub-region with an estimated population size of about 200 million people. Out of this only 45% have access to electricity. The current total grid generation capacity is estimated at 7MW which supplies commercial, industrial, social and institutional centers as well as residential areas. This is gross inadequate for meaningful development. Based on this, it's the aim of this research to diversify and integrate the power sector, thereby tapping into the various energy sources including renewable. In this research titled "Techno economic design and integration of Sustainable Hybrid PV/Wind/Diesel Turbine generation into the Nigerian power system", the idea is to integrate fossil fuel energy sources with renewable (photovoltaic) to generate a higher energy output at a lower cost while minimizing environmental pact. A Techno-economic environmental optimization framework will be developed and implemented in HOMER, a simulation software used for modeling renewable energy and tested on the Nigerian power system. The outcome of the research reveals that, not only does the hybrid system configuration perform better than base case simulation when compared with the NPC for all six simulations; it also displayed better performance in the categories such as electrical, fuel consumption and CO2 reduction.
